About Mutaho

Mutaho is a rural village in Western Kenya, home to some of the most breathtaking scenery in the world...

In Mutaho and surrounding areas there are hundreds children who have been orphaned by HIV/AIDS a number which is expected to increase dramatically over the next five years. In Mutaho, a rural village in Western Kenya, 80% of the population lives below the poverty line, making it amongst the poorest in the country. The low economic status of this area has been intensified by many factors including illiteracy, high death rates, low agricultural productivity and a lack of financial income amongst residents.

The extreme poverty in this area makes it virtually impossible for families to adequately support individual orphans, a much as they would like to. Currently many of the orphans in this area are being accommodated by distant relatives or friends of their deceased families. Although there is no shortage of love with which these families may support the children, the cost of supporting an extra child is plunging these families more deeply into poverty.

In Kenya, children of poorer families are not able to finish school as they are not able to pay secondary school fees. As a consequence they are forced to leave school after class eight.
