Information on up and coming projects will be included here...
Soon we hope to tell you more about our dairy projects, maize mill and most importantly our school.
Poultry Project
MCF now keeps over 150 layer hens, making us a large egg supplier in Kakamega. Income from eggs and birds sold, helps to support the children and other projects. The chickens are caredd for by Kizito who manages the project with the help of a group of the primary school boys who come of a weekend and after school to learn about raising poultry and runnig the projects.
Dairy Project
We have started our dairy project with the purchase of one dairy cow, a Friesian-Ayrshire named Peraton, who will deliver a calf in April/May and then provide MCF with a source of income as we will be able to sell her milk to help support the children.
Dairy animals are make for a great business. In Mutaho there are no other milk suppliers, so any one wishing to have milk in their morning cup of tea is forced to travel to the next village. This will change when Peraton starts to give milk to be sold in Mutaho. When Peraton has her calf, the children will either benefit from another milking animal in the future, or from a bull. A bull can be hired out to other famers wishing to breed their own cows, but who don't themselves own a bull.
In the future, MCF hopes to expand this project to increase profits for the children.
Dairy animals have an added advantage to the children and families living in the community. Once three dairy cows are owned, their waste can be used to sustain a biogas project, providing lighting and gas for cooking. When we build the school, we hope to be in a position to set up biogas to provide lighting for nighttime activites and evening classes.
Tree Nursery
In 2007 MCF set up a nursery project in Mutaho. The nursery grows and sells seedlings for sale, as well as providing the children and their gaurdians with vegetable seedlings to plant on their own land as a source of food and income.
As a part of our community education program the nursery provides trees and vegetable seedlings to local primary schools. Kizito takes the plants to the schools and with the help of the students he plants them, explaining to the children the benefits of planting, and teaching them how to care for the plants.
These additional plants also allow schools to provide more substantial lunches for students as well as making a more child friendly school grounds with trees for the children to play under.
